44 Days of Witchery- Day 3: Witchy tools: Athamé.

Athamé: A ceremonial dagger, with a double-edged blade and usually a black handle. It is the main ritual implement or magical tool among several used in the religion of Wicca, and is also used in various other neopagan traditions.

Element: Fire or Air (This depends on the practitioner)

Energy: Masculine

Deity: Horned God

Uses: Casting the circle and Calling the Quarters. Also used for redirecting energy in most ritual work.

In my own practices I don’t make use of an Athamé for a couple of simple reasons. I’ve never felt the need to use a tool to manipulate energy, my body is the only tool I need or use in any kind of ritual work I might do. I also don’t do much “Ritual” based work, A lot of what I do involves chanting and trance states.

There’s also my staunch belief that spending tons of money on something that I’m never going to use is ridiculous. I understand that for some practitioners the Athamé is their most cherished and widely used esoteric item, I’m just not one of those people. Don’t get me wrong here, I don’t see anything wrong with using the Athamé, I’ve just never felt the need for it.
